ÓûÂþɬ Community Justice Plan 2024 - 2027

We are looking for your views on our draft ÓûÂþɬ Community Justice Plan 2024 - 2027

Community justice is where people who have broken the law are held to account and supported to reconnect and contribute to their communities.

The evidence shows community justice can help people stop breaking the law again leading to fewer victims and safer communities.

Where it is safe to do so, people who commit certain crimes receive community-based sentences. This can include treatment for underlying issues such as drug or alcohol addiction, unpaid work, fines and compensation or restrictions of liberty such as electronic monitoring and curfews.

Scotland has one of the highest prison population rates in Western Europe, leading to severe overcrowding. Overcrowding makes prisons harder to manage and reduces the effectiveness of rehabilitation programmes which in turn increases reoffending rates and makes our communities less safe.

You can read the draft Plan and Appendices here -

We are asking for your feedback on the draft Plan, and your views on some key aims within the Plan.

Now we would like to ask for your opinion on some key statements from the draft Plan. Please tell us if you agree or disagree with them, and any reasons for your answers.

Short prison sentences of a year or less show higher reconviction rates (50%) compared to Community Payback Orders (28%). People should help their community as part of a community sentence rather than spend a few months in prison for a minor offence.
Research on public opinion shows that the Scottish public think that prisons should rehabilitate individuals and help them reintegrate into society, reduce re-offending as well as protect the public.
The size and scale of Argyll & Bute can add to the complexity of managing community justice particularly in remote and island areas
The Community Justice Partnership, in line with national ÓûÂþɬ, will continue to focus on how we best support people to address underlying issues that may be contributing to offending (problematic drug/alcohol misuse, mental health, housing issues, poverty) to assist people move away from offending behaviours
