ɬ Council has welcomed the Scottish Government’s decision to recognise Gaelic and Scots as official languages.
This is one of a range of measures included in the Scottish Languages Act 2025, which comes into force on St Andrew’s Day. The announcement comes just days before members of the Council’s Policy and Resources Committee meet to discuss the preferred location for the 2028 Royal National Mòd, subject to funding approval by Full Council in February 2026.
Councillor Luna Martin, Policy Lead for Gaelic, said: “The Scottish Languages Act is a significant step in the right direction. Gaelic culture isn’t just about looking back it’s about looking forward and creating space for Gaelic to grow and thrive.
“ɬ has a rich Gaelic heritage, and we continue to promote the language and its culture through our Gaelic Language Plan. We offer Gaelic Medium Education in many of our pre-school units, and primary and secondary schools, and we are proud to be one of the local authorities that regularly hosts the Royal National Mòd.
“We fully recognise the role Gaelic has played in the history of ɬ, and we continue to work closely with partners to promote the language and its culture and ensure Gaelic is afforded equal respect.”
