How did you get into your job/career area?
This job is completely unrelated to my degree in Costume Design and Construction and pre island career as a freelance Costume Supervisor for theatre companies in Glasgow. But island life throws up all kinds of opportunities, challenges and surprises in life! I thought the job sounded interesting and there’s actually quite a few transferrable skills between firefighting and working backstage – keeping calm under pressure and thinking quickly being a couple!
What does your job involve?
Daily checks of the runway and firefighting equipment. Monitoring weather and landing/ take off conditions. Radio communication with the pilot. Checking in passengers. Keeping up to date with training so we can respond effectively to any emergency situations.
Favourite thing about your job?
Working in a team, every day is different, spending time outside. Providing an important service for the island.
Best thing about working in ÓûÂþɬ?
The scenery and lifestyle. This job allows me to live in a beautiful place which I love and fulfils a vital role in the community.
