Oban Airport has been selected as one of two new seasonal helicopter bases for HM Coastguard.
The airport, which owned and operated by ɬ Council, is ideally placed to support this vital service, offering quick and easy access to the west coast and surrounding islands. The base will enhance HM Coastguard’s search and rescue provision during the busy summer months, supporting safety in one of Scotland’s most popular coastal regions.
The council has worked closely with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to get the project off the ground and is delighted that construction work has now started on site.
The base will operate one aircraft from April to September. The second seasonal base will be located in Carlisle.
Councillor John Armour, Policy Lead for Roads, Amenity and Transport Services, said: “The presence of a seasonal base at Oban Airport reflects the strategic importance of ɬ and the vital role our airport plays in public service aviation and supporting emergency services. We look forward to working further with the MCA to ensure the success of this initiative and to help keep residents and visitors safe.”
