Back to school held extra excitement for the pupils of Helensburgh’s John Logie Baird Primary School this year.
The pupils have returned to their school building after works to remove Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) from the roof have completed.
ɬ Council worked with specialist engineers and contractors to remove and replaced the roof structure. During the works, the Council was able to carry out additional improvements including painting classrooms.
Children and staff temporarily moved to a modular school building on the school grounds last year whilst the works were underway. ELC children moved to neighbouring schools and will return to John Logie Baird next month.
Councillor Fiona Howard, Depute Policy Lead for Education:
“This has been a huge undertaking for everyone concerned and I would like to thank our children, staff and families for their patience and understanding. I’m so pleased to see that pupils have now returned back into the school building and we hope they have settled back into normal school life and enjoying their newly refreshed classrooms.
“The next and final step is to welcome back our ELC children next month. There has been an enormous amount of community sprit during the works programme within both the school and the wider community. We now look forward to our ELC children returning next month.”
Caroline Jones, Acting Head Teacher of John Logie Baird:
“Our children are thrilled they have returned to a beautifully refreshed building featuring many new and exciting learning environments and spaces.
“The large and spacious classrooms are all freshly painted and alongside these, our learners now have access to a STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Room, a nurture and playroom, a music room and a new library space.
“The JLB Parent Council are working hard to create our new Family Learning space, the "Forget-Me-Not" Room. They hope to start a breakfast club, and to create a space for the community to come and learn with, and from, the pupils in the school as they develop their leadership skills.
“I would like to extend a huge thanks not only to the staff and families who helped and supported to make the move a success, but also to contractors Heron Bros, DCF and members of the Royal Navy who supported us to do a lot of the heavy lifting and shifting of furniture.
“And thanks must go to the children who have shown great resilience throughout the decant period, and we are all now looking forward to new beginnings in familiar surroundings at John Logie Baird Primary school.”
The school will hold a grand opening day on 18 September to welcome the Helensburgh Community to have a look around the school and Learning Centre.
